Eco Friendly Filmmaking
What is Eco-Friendly Filmmaking?
The filmmaking industry has a big influence towards carbon emissions but can also influence change. We have a big voice and a big audience.
Things can be changed during pre production such as paper waste, going digital with scripts, travel, energy usage in offices and homes.
Below is a list of a few other things that can be done during productions, both large and small to make those changes.
These things can take time, but changes can be made immediately, however use up what you have so they don't go to waste. And when it's time to replace items, recycle and dispose of things appropriately.
How filmmakers can go greener.

1.
Make all paperwork digital. Keep things on a cloud based system which can be protected. Limit how much printing is done. Send digital invoices and contract and even sign things digitally.
2.
Now a days everyone has a reusable bottle/coffee cups, so encourage the use of these during productions. Provide recycling bins for any waste that is produced in offices and on set.
3.
Lighting is a BIG energy source both on set and off. In offices, look at energy providers, and energy saving bulbs. Consider LED lighting on set. The RGB quality in lighting has improved to replicate tungsten lighting using gels, so this shouldn't take away from creativity. And you can still use gels with LED lighting, they just won't burn like with tungsten. Win Win!
4.
Consider only having vegetarian/ vegan options. Whilst this might make a lot of people uncomfortable, the agriculture industry has a massive carbon footprint as well as other ethical issues. Personally, if these options were available, cast and crew wouldn't complain. They would enjoy some tasty and healthy food, and it might influence their choices off set. But at least the production is doing everything they can for a greener production.
5.
Consider having cast and crew local to where filming will take place. Should travel be required, look at walking, biking, train, and car sharing. When considering cars as transport- look at electric cars or a hybrid car. There are tips online for flying greener which is worth a read if flying is still a requirement. Travel shouldn't hinder a production, but take into consideration these options before the journey.
